Semi-Permanent Ink Micropigmentation

Reconstructive Tattooing & Skin Camouflage

Skin camouflage uses fine, skin-toned pigment to soften the look of scars and areas of uneven colour, so they sit more quietly against the skin around them.

It is a gentle, carefully colour-matched form of cosmetic tattooing, carried out in a private treatment room at our Calne clinic. Many people come to us after surgery, an injury, or a skin condition has left a mark they would rather not notice every time they look in the mirror. The aim is simple: to help you feel more comfortable and confident in your own skin.

Type IIIIIIIVVVI Pigments are blended to your own skin tone. Your practitioner assesses your skin type (on the Fitzpatrick scale, I to VI) and its undertones at consultation, and tests the match before any treatment.

What we can help with

Scar camouflage (Available now)

Blending pale or uneven scars from surgery, injury or skin conditions so they are less noticeable. Scars need to be fully healed, flat and no longer pink or red.

Lip repair (Available now)

A soft tint that restores natural colour, redefines faded lip borders and evens out shape, including after scarring or a cleft lip repair.

Decorative scar designs (Coming soon)

Bespoke tattoo artwork designed around a scar, for clients who would rather turn it into something beautiful than hide it.

3D areola & nipple restoration (Coming soon)

Realistic, shaded areola and nipple tattooing after breast surgery. Register your interest and we will let you know when this launches.

What to expect

  1. ConsultationWe look at the area together, talk through your medical history and what you hope for, and agree whether camouflage is right for you. If it isn’t, we will say so. [fee / free? length?]
  2. Patch test and colour matchA small patch test checks how your skin responds to the pigment and lets us refine the colour. This is done at least [48 hours / 7 days] before treatment.
  3. TreatmentPigment is placed into the upper layers of the skin with a fine needle. A topical numbing cream can be used. Sessions usually last [1–3 hours] depending on the area.
  4. Healing and top-upThe colour looks stronger at first and softens over the following weeks. A follow-up session around 6 to 8 weeks later lets us adjust the tone and fill any areas that need it. Most scars need two or more sessions.

Is it right for me?

Skin camouflage works best on flat, settled scars that are lighter than the surrounding skin. It is usually not suitable if you:

  • have a scar less than about 12 months old, or one that is still red, raised or changing
  • tend to form keloid or raised (hypertrophic) scars
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • have an active skin condition, infection or sunburn in the area
  • are having chemotherapy or radiotherapy, or take medication that affects healing or blood clotting

Please tell us about any health conditions at your consultation. If you are under the care of a consultant, we may ask you to check with them first. Treatment is for clients aged 18 and over.

Cindy Powell

Cindy brings a fine artist’s eye for colour to restorative tattooing. A Wiltshire-based oil painter and MA student at Falmouth University, her paintings have been commissioned by Network Rail and are displayed at London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads stations.

That training in mixing and layering colour sits at the heart of skin camouflage, where matching the subtle shifts in a person’s natural skin tone makes the difference between a mark that is covered and one that simply fades into the background. Cindy has completed specialist training and is registered with Wiltshire Council for cosmetic tattooing.

Common questions

Does it hurt?

Most people describe it as a scratching sensation. Scar tissue can feel different from normal skin, and a numbing cream is used to keep you comfortable. How long does it last?

Results are semi-permanent and gradually soften over several years, depending on your skin, sun exposure and aftercare. An occasional colour refresh keeps the match right as your skin changes.

Will it make my scar disappear?

No treatment can remove a scar. Camouflage reduces the contrast in colour so the scar is far less noticeable. Texture, such as a raised or dipped scar, will still be there. We will give you an honest view at your consultation.

How do I look after it afterwards?

Keep the area clean and dry, apply the aftercare balm we give you, and avoid swimming, saunas, sunbeds and direct sun for at least two weeks. We will give you full written aftercare instructions.
