Bridget WalkerM.A. Integrative Arts Psychotherapy, M.Sc., R.N.M.H., B.A.
Welcome to my web page, my name is Bridget Walker and I am a registered and highly experienced Psychotherapist, Post Graduate Course Tutor and Clinical Supervisor. I am also a registered Mental Health Nurse.
My interest in mental health stems from a background in Psychiatry, Education and the Arts. I have a strong belief in the potential for emotional, physical and spiritual health in every individual.
Apart from immediate crises such as redundancy, relationship breakdown and bereavement, many of us find a time in our lives when we need to explore our life direction in a confidential environment. Psychotherapy meets this need and can be useful both in times of crisis, chronic situations and as a forum for personal curiosity and development.
For some people issues may not have been dealt with over time and continue to impact on everyday life including destructive relationships, particular patterns of behaviour, depressive episodes or recurrent negative thinking. These situations require longer exploration and outcomes indicate more sustainable change. I believe that if we can understand and manage these successfully we can live to our greatest potential.
A client’s willingness to engage with psychotherapy directly affects the successful outcome.
I have worked as a Nurse Psychotherapist for over 20 years with individuals and groups in various settings both within the NHS and Private Practice. Areas in which people have been helped by seeing me and engaging in the process of psychotherapy are:
- Managing relationships and other people
- Loss and Bereavement past and present
- Anxiety and Depression
- Low self esteem and low confidence,
- Identity issues
- Looking at unhealthy patterns of thinking and moving on from them
- Life reviews and transitions
- Body image and relationship with food
Through clinical experience and research it has become clear to me that more people are coming to therapy with issues relating to their bodies and the complex issues of Body Image and Body Concept. I have therefore extended my training to include expertise in this area and now offer direct consultation relating to Body Concept Issues. People have successfully explored in their therapy with me:
- Patterns of healthy and unhealthy eating
- Historic problems with food within childhood
- Body consciousness
- Sexuality and gender issues
- Confidence and self esteem
- Changes to the body through illness, pregnancy, weight gain and loss and different distortions to body image.
I work with adults in individual and group settings from the Wellbeing Clinic.
I am happy to discuss my style of working and ways in which we might be able to think about your specific needs and look forward to meeting you.
I work within a theoretical and practical framework and am fully insured and registered with the UKCP (United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy) and IATE (Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education). To be a member of the UKCP and my member organisation IATE I am required to undertake various rigorous continuing professional development courses each year. I adhere to both these organisations’ code of ethics and professional conduct.
